Robert H.
Berger of Wilbraham, MA
died Saturday at his home. He was born in Bridgeport, CT,
began violin lessons at the age of 3 and piano at age 9. At
age 6 he won the young classical violin contest. He studied
under Samuel Gardner of Julliard School of Music and with
Sascha Fidelman and Kemp Stillings. At age 19 he was the
youngest person hired to join the first violin section of
the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
He joined the National
Orchestral Association in NYC during which time he played in
society bands, hotels and night clubs. He traveled and
played with many big bands including Lawrence Welk, Roy
Benson, Jerry Glidden, Ernie Hechsher and Dick LaSalle.
He came to Western Mass in 1950
with Decca Records. He became manager of WREB Radio, WMAS
Radio and General Manager of WHYN AM/FM and TV 40. He was
also President of his own advertising agency, Berger and
Barron. An active Rotarian for 45 years in Springfield and
Holyoke and received the Paul Harris Award in Rotary.

Joseph
E. English , 67, of 108 Hartford
Terrace, an author and poet, died Saturday in Boston's
Massachusetts General Hospital.
He was editor of the Poet's
Page and a columnist for the arts page of the
Springfield Journal.
He was an adjunct professor
at American International College.
A copy writer for WMAS and
WHMP radio stations, in the 1950s, he worked for Radio
Free Europe in New York City.
Born in Westfield, he moved
to this city 37 years ago.
He leaves three brothers,
James P. of Villanova, Pa., David P. of Calgary,
Alberta, Canada, and Kevin T. of Belchertown and several
nephews and nieces.
A graveside funeral will be
held Wednesday morning in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Tuesday evening at Hafey
Springfield Chapels.

WESTFIELD - Alan D. McAlary,
74, a western MA radio broadcaster whose career spanned
half a century, died at his home in Westfield on July
11, 2012. Mr. McAlary was a disc jockey who, from 1958
to 2008, worked under the aliases Cousin Cal and Cal
McLain for radio stations WDEW (now WNNZ) in Westfield,
WMAS and WHYN in Springfield, WREB in
Holyoke, and WACE in Chicopee, from which he retired.
Mr. McAlary's specialty was
country music, inspired by his idol, Hank Williams, Sr.,
and he aired one of the area's earliest programs in this
genre over WDEW in 1958. In his later years, Mr. McAlary
became an antique auto hobbyist, collecting and
restoring three vintage 1930s and '40s cars.
He leaves two sons, David
and Andrew of Springfield; stepchildren Donna Perry of
Plymouth, Bruce Bailey of Utica, NY, and Carol Bradley
of Turners Falls; sister Barbara Kashar of Plymouth;
brother David of Falls Church, VA; and five
grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be at
Firtion-Adams funeral home in Westfield on Friday July
20th from 5 - 8 PM. The funeral service is scheduled for
11AM Saturday July 21st at the funeral home, followed by
burial in Pine Hill cemetery.

COFFEYVILLE, KS -
Robert R. Charest, 68, of 114 N. Glendale Ave.,
Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Sunday, April 20,
2008 at home.
Born in Springfield,
Massachusetts, son of Raymond and Rita (DeLoria)
Charest, he was a resident of Agawam and Feeding
Hills, MA before moving to the Phoenix area in 1986
and Coffeyville, KS in 2004. He was a graduate of
Agawam High School and the Cambridge School of Radio
& T.V. Broadcasting in Boston, MA.
He joined the U.S. Army
in 1961, serving in the Panama Canal Zone in the
Special Forces until October of 1964. After
completing his service, he returned to
WHYN Radio
in Springfield, Massachusetts and was the popular
morning personality, Bob Allen, for several years
before becoming the Radio Program Director. He
completed his 25 years with
WHYN as an
integral part of their Radio Sales team.
He moved to Arizona in
1986 where he earned a Private Investigator License
and worked with security until he took early
retirement in 1996. He loved and played golf as much
as he could and was a member of the Willow Creek
Golf Club in Sun City, AZ.
He leaves his wife of
43 years Judy (Newell) Charest, two sons Michael of
Denver, CO and Mark and his wife, Julie of
Coffeyville, KS and his two grandchildren Katie and
Nicole Charest. He also leaves his brother, Len and
his wife Cynthia, of Ludlow, MA and his
sister-in-law, Barbara Charest, the wife of his
youngest brother, Don, who died on November 13th.
The memorial service is
being arranged by Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and
will be held in the Ford-Wulf-Burns Chapel, 2405
Woodland, Coffeyville, KS 67337, on Friday, April
25, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in
memory of Robert Charest and mailed to: 313 South
Market, Wichita, KS 67202.

SOUTHWICK -
Thomas R. "Bud Stone" Ferrazano, 74, of
Southwick, died Wednesday, May 7 in Heritage
Hall Nursing Home, Agawam. Thomas worked as
a broadcaster for 15 years at
WHYN
Radio AM and FM as well as
WHYN
TV and was better known by his air name, Bud
Stone. He later worked as Director and
taught at the Conn. School of Broadcasting
in Wellesley, MA and Hartford, CT for 10
years and retired in 1994.
Born in
Worcester, MA on October 21, 1928 the son of
the late Thomas and Teresa (Iacavone)
Ferrazano, he resided in Springfield and for
the past 30 years has been a resident of
Southwick and a communicant of Our Lady of
the Lake Church, Southwick.
He served his
country with the United States Army during
the Korean War, attaining the rank of
Private First Class.
He is survived
by his wife of 40 years, Joanne T. (Dernago)
Ferrazano; his son, Ted T. Ferrazano of
Southwick; his brother, Anthony Ferrazano of
Worcester, MA.
Thomas' funeral
will be Saturday afternoon, 1:30 p.m. at the
Southwick Forastiere Funeral Home, 624
College Highway, Southwick. Burial will be
in New Cemetery, Southwick. Visiting hours
are Friday, 4 to 8 p.m.

Daniel J.
Maruszczak, 71, of 26 DePalma St. in the
Feeding Hills section, died Tuesday at a
local nursing home. He was an electronics
technician for Hamilton Standard Division of
United Technologies Corp. in Windsor Locks,
Conn.
He also was a
former general manager of radio station WMAS
of Springfield, an engineer and announcer at
radio station
WHYN
of Springfield for nine years, and worked at
radio stations WTIC and WDRC in Hartford,
Conn., for many years.
Born in
Springfield, he lived in Agawam for many
years and attended American International
College in Springfield. He was a communicant
of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop
and Martyr, in Chicopee. He leaves his wife,
the former Dorothy A. Majeski; two sons,
Daniel J. Jr. of West Springfield and Joseph
P. of Warwick, R.I.; and three
grandchildren.
The funeral
will be this morning at Agawam Funeral Home
and the basilica, with burial in the parish
cemetery, both in Chicopee. Memorial
donations may be made to the Hospice of the
Pioneer Valley, 50 Maple Street, Box 9058,

John E. ("Jay")
Kubik, 47, of Chicopee died Friday in
Holyoke Hospital.
He was a former
program director and anchorman for Radio
Station WACE, and later an engineer at Radio
Stations
WMAS , WSPR, WARE, and WREB.
He most
recently owned Jay Kubik Productions, a
professional disc jockey service, for 15
years. He retired in 1994.
A lifelong
resident, he attended city schools, and was
a communicant of the Basilica of St.
Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr.
He was a
graduate of the Connecticut School of
Broadcasting.
He leaves his
mother, Mildred ("Marty") Topor Kubik of
Chicopee, and cousins and friends.
The funeral
will be on Thursday morning at Starzyk
Funeral Home and the basilica, with burial
in the parish cemetery.
Calling hours
are set Wednesday evening.
